Operation Bodenplatte

By patspeirs
Operation Bodenplatte

The latter days of 1944 saw the Luftwaffe forces operating far fewer airfields and beset by fuel, maintenance and crew shortages. Thrown into ever more desperate situations against the almost total air superiority of the Allied forces the Luftwaffe tried one last maximum effort - Operation Bodenplatte (Baseplate). Virtually every strike aircraft that could be made operational was tasked against the continental Allied bases on Jan 1st 1945 and although many RAF and USAF aircraft were destroyed, estimates are in the 600-700 region, in this massive attack some 300 Luftwaffe aircraft were lost along with many irreplaceable highly experienced pilots. A signal victory on the day but a massive strategic loss. The back of the Luftwaffe was broken at last.

The usual composite presentation of airshow aircraft pics, backgound archive images and some wee additions here and there.

The very best of fortune in 2011 for all of you and many thanks for all your help and encouragement in the past - stiil struggling with some family problems - hopefully back soon,
