It could have happened whilst he was in the nest - the stupid creatures will use fishing line as nesting materials, it gets caught around legs and after a time the limb falls off! It does look healthy enough.

Excellent capture Herman. I hope we don't get similar casualties here when over enthousiastic volunteers try to remove birds that are frozen to the ice in the canals!

I have to ask though, I'm trying to learn here: how come you got this depth of field with f.5? Thought it should be a wider aperture...
