Our Smudge

By lobsterboy
I thought it was about time I uploaded a new picture for our new dog "Smudge", who was rescued from a puppy farm .

She has come a long way since March:
Her coat that was bald in places and riddled with flea dirt is now lush, richly coloured and clean.

Her eyes that were dull and suffering with conjunctivitus are now bright and full of life.

She had never seen a house yet now she is completly house trained.

She no longer cowers when people look at her.

She has gone from half starved to just the right weight (wish I could do that Smile.

She has found both her tail wagging and her barking muscles.

Basically she has gone from being a scared abused thing in the corner of the sofa to being "Our Smudge".

Nice shot, good on you for rescuing her. They always reward you by being such a faithful, fun companion. Pam

Her face reminds me of Clement Freud Chris (if you are old enough to remember him). You can be very proud of yourself for all the work you have done with her. She looks very content.

Lovely photo and story Chris, we had a spaniel for 15 years, they are gorgeous dogs. Ours was a blue roan too.

Stunning girl, beautiful portrait. How is she getting on with Boysie?

How do you meter for a black and white dog? Also, do you do any post production to bring out the eyes - I tend to find they sometimes disappear in a predominantly black face.

I'm going to get that 'the domesticated dog' book - getting quite interested in how the different breeds evolved and how to work with their innate instincts - fastinating stuff.

Hi Sus,

Yes she is getting on fine with Boysie, there were a few grumbles at first but now he puts up with her...she loves him and tries to protect him if you put his lead on. To be honest she has worked out much better than we ever could have hoped Smile

As for metering - I have no real idea. I am currently playing with ounce flash and a white card to give catchlights in the eyes. Other than that I am still having the black on black problem too.

The book sounds like a good read - let me know if its any good.

Cheers lobster. (I just started googling for 'ounce flash' - was getting excited that this was some new technique! Strangely enough I can't find it...[don't worry I've twigged!])

(Unless it really IS some new technique then please let me know!)
