Painting lesson

By gss
Today a picture from my childhood. The University of Architecture organizes almost each year, documentary trips for students; it is a long tradition on it. In the sixties the school has bought 2 crazy buses to make those excursions. I said crazy buses because, try to imagine, in full communism 2 normal buses completely painted outside by the students. With what subject: caricatures of almost all the school teachers. As my father was a teacher in the school he had his own caricature... Grin

In general it was a kind of bohemian excursion: eating in the bus, sleeping at students dorm, or in tents. or even to local people. All was focused to see and learn, to observe and understand. We had even a small accident, where the only injured was me [7 years old, - a huge Transylvanian peasant round bread - a delight now become history - has fallen on my delicate fingers that were swollen..Smile. Memories. One of the buses has descended 1000 m altitude without brakes - only the driver skill - he told us after the descent!, And so on, many small adventures.

Today picture is a 1970 slide from this trip. Maybe you may answer why I was there.
It was a certain number of places reserved for teachers, and as some of them preferred a private holidays, it was always some free places for teachers. As we had no car at that era, my father came with my mother and me. It was the second trip. So I am familiar to monuments, restoration, history, since I was 6... This trips were a kind of Romania Tour - circuits of more than 1000 kms in 2 weeks or more, visiting almost all - dozens of architectural or natural monuments. It was fantastic also, because all the time we were on the roads, students were singing. Really crazy buses!

This was an art lesson by the guide of the Unesco heritage church of Arbore , built in 1502 by the nobleman defender of Suceava fortress Luca Arbore. It is one of the rare churches not being monastery and being painted outside. It has a wonderful iconographic program, having in general the blue color as dominant [each church has a different dominant color. This is the west facade as a large triumphal arch. Arbore church was the favorite monument of my father.

What I like most here is the stylization of some of the paintings, especially the hills are painted as reclining on each other. A really remarkable feature, Silviu.

Beautiful art. Probably nothing is known about the artists, their lives or even their names but we have their beautiful art to admire. Thank you for sharing these interesting stories and history. I have learned so much from following your posts.

Sounds and looks a memorable visit to such a lovely place. It is amazing how the paintings have stood up to the weather. Are they restored regularly?
