Pangkor Island, Malaysia

By david1810
A long exposure from a recent trip to Malaysia.

As usual I would love any critique on my shooting and/or pp. This site has helped me improve and see my images from other view points. A great way to improve

thanks in advance

The light is lovely, the subject demands to be photographed.

Processing may have included some slightly aggressive sharpening, I think - looking large, are there faint haloes around the posts?

For me, there's just a bit too much in this to be really focussed, as a picture. I cn see loads of interesting crops here, and I'm going to try one or two as mods.

Where there are lots of individually-lovely elements in front of the caemra, it's often hard to leave any of them out - my feeling is that it's worth the effort, unless you can find a compelling way to compose them together into a sort of Bayeux tapestry, telling a story across the frame. Colin Prior's panoramic views do this, and it's really hard to achieve.

Lovely colours here, I do agree with the above ref halos though.
I see you have gone for a 50/50 crop to this, if it were mine...and I am so not a landscaper Sad...I would have put the horizon on the upper third and cropped off some of that beautiful sky..sorry. It just changes the way you see an image and what you see in it.
I'm sure there will be others along with different ideas too, then the choice is yours.

Its a very attractive shot.

I dont think the faint halos are connected with oversharpening, - its not unusual to get this effect on a straight high contrast edge with a long exposure; however, lowering clarity can reduce the effect.

As symmetry is important here, I would make sure that centre lead pipe in precisely in the centre, - its a little off; that horizon precisely level, - its a microscopic amount off (0.23 degrees).

I would also correct white balance, - auto will leave this with a bias towards blue, - and it looks like magenta is a bit strong to me.

I agree the crop placing the horizon on a third is worth looking at, - Ive used it in the mod, which also has the tweaks applied as suggested.

Well done,

I'm 100% with John here... too much sky, and that great big post in the foreground is a no-no in my opinion.
John's first mod does the business.

A scene that just had to be photographed. I've done a mod with a little bit of wishful thinking.

Crop about half of that sky away, get a cinematic aspect ratio. I think it needs more contrast, try crushing the blacks a bit.

Thank you all for taking the time to critique my image.

I will definitely play with some different crops.
