Paraclisul Sf Gheorghe

By gss
The Romanian Orthodox Patriarchy in Bucharest, view of the St George Patriarchal Chapel from the Patriarchy Palace columns.
The small chapel - in Romanian is called Paraclis, the same word meaning also an Orthodox liturgy dedicated to a Saint or to the Virgin, word coming from Greek = para ekklesia = near the church - is specific for the XVIII century, knew here as the Phanariote Century, as the local rulers were designated by the Sublime Ottoman Porte from the nobles Greeks from Phanar neighborhood in Constantinople (today Istanbul).
This small, but slender church (chapel) was first built at the same time as the main church, in the second half of the XVII century, but was completely rebuilt by Nicolae Mavrocordat ( Nicholas Mavrocordatos ) in 1723. Has one of the most fabulous iconostasis in Romania, built in rich decorated carved woodwork, completely gilded. An image can be seen here, scrolling down to the seventh picture. It isn't able to be visited as is the private chapel of the Patriarch. Was completely restored between 2000-2011.
All Episcopal churches have the statute of a monastery or an hermitage. This chapel deserve a small nuns hermitage.
In general Paraclis chapels are not in the middle of the enclosures as the main churches but inside the enclosures, in one of their corners. As they are more protected from cold winters, they are generally used and known as "winter churches".
Sorry for my absence these days but was terrible busy. So, even late, I want to wish all a nice Easter, for those who had yet celebrated it. These year Orthodox Easter came later than western churches with one week, so for me I am still in the Passion Week, will celebrate Easter this Sunday (April 12)
A movie about this chapel can be seen here
