The Parish Church of St. James The Great, Baldersby St. James, Thirsk, North Yorkshire. This wonderful Grade 1 listed church, with its imposing spire, was designed by the Victorian architect William Butterfield. The church was commissioned by William Henry Dawnay, Viscount Downe. The church was consecrated on 29th September 1857 at a service conducted by the then Lord Archbishop of York. John Betcheman says in his
Best British Churches: "The first sight of Baldersby is of the 160-foot tower and spire rising over the York plain. The whole hamlet of church, school and cottages is the work of William Butterfield, 1857 - an outstanding composition." As I drove towards Baldersby today his words were proven - I saw the spire from some distance away.
