Passchendaele

By davidhu
Just returned from an excellent tour covering the battlefields of WW1. This tour was specifically organised to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Passchendale. The area is now gently rolling fields but dotted with many war cemeteries, each with it's lone cross of sacrifice. This one is called Divisional Collecting Post Cemetery, one of three within 100 yards of each other.

Thanks for looking

This stood out even in thumbnail form David. The large expanse of sky helps to make this a very moving photograph.
It would be comforting to think that we had learnt the lessons of such horrors but ...

I love your composition here, stark and uncompromising, perfectly suited to the subject. The beauty of the colour also adds a note of hope that we can do better in the future.

Something very poignant about this Dave, with the lone figure in a moment of quiet reflection perhaps...

The big sky puts it all into context Dave. So many killed for so little reason. And very probably it'll all happen again somewhere sometime.

If I should die, think only this of me.
That there's some corner of a foreign field that is forever England.
There shall be in that rich earth a richer dust concealed.

Nice one Dave.

This is immensely powerful, and I'm annoyed with myself that I've only just come upon it. Very spare, very economical. The single figure looks totally alone in thought, and the detachment is effective.
I've been past a number of the WW1 sites but never had the chance to stop. My great-uncle served with the Canadian Highlanders (he was a Jerseyman, we never quite worked this out...) until he was wounded at Vimy Ridge, and we still have his letters. There's a lot of families' histories tied up in this picture.
