The RAF fighter arm had a torrid time after the introduction of the FW190 with it’s superior performance and striking power. However, after a disoriented Luftwaffe pilot landed at a southern RAF base with a fully serviceable FW, the knowledge gained helped the UK designers to play catch-up with the next series of Spitfire upgrades. The Mk9 in the image was at least the equivalent of the early FW types and now its ‘payback time’.
The FW had many innovative items the most important, in context of the image, was the provision of explosive jettison for the canopy.
Note. the chute imagery is for real - see Duxford Legends 2011 - and sadly the FW190 was badly damaged in France after an engine failure resulted in a shallow water ditching, rebuild doubtful.
