I guess there are very few Peat Cutters left as we are all discouraged from buying compost containing peat these days. Although some is still burned on fires.
Are these huts still used ? This one looks to be a fair condition with curtains at the windows but no smoke from the chimney.

Yes they are still used but not year round, Peat on Lewis is used solely for burning as domestic fuel, all the islanders rely on it and have an annual quota they are allowed to cut.
You can see it stacked out to dry all over the island.

Widely used to gain the variety of flavours in the Scottish bottled sunshine ;) Not sure that peat isn't out there with fossil fuels, and one of the bad boys of the energy world now.
