Pelican

By FeatherFriend
Something a little different today, still another bird but this time a monster compared to my usual uploads. Paid a visit to Dartmoor Zoological Park a few days ago and although the number of species was few compared to what I expected, there were some situations where the different animals and birds could be photographed without the usual unsightly wire fences. I chose this angle to try and convey the size of the beak and also the pinkish colour under the outer feathers. Hope you like it.
Geoff.

Brief information: A pelican is any of several very large water birds with a distinctive pouch under the beak belonging to the bird family Pelecanidae, also from the fossil record,[6] it is known that Pelicans have been around for over 40 million years, the earliest fossil Pelecanus being found in early Miocene deposits in France.

Thank you for all your votes and lovely comments on 'shake a tail feather', I appreciate your encouragement so much.

Part of its charm is the absence of any sign of captivity, but I also like the preening stance and the light, showing those feathers and that beak to perfection.

Very good feather detail and a lovely clear eye.
Many years ago in Cyprus a pelican took up residence in Paphos and became such a celebrity it would pose taking tops off beer bottles. I think it lived for years and since then others have followed suit.
