Peoples Liberation Army Billboard.

By Carlkuntze
Beijing, China. 1989.

After the crackdown at Tien An Men Square, residents lost confidence in The
Peoples Liberation Army, supposed to be their nominal protector. Murals like this appeared throughout the city, this one overlooking the square itself. Atmosphere was still explosive. When I tried to photograph the giant Mao portrait opposite, I heard a shout, which I normally ignored because it was
usually a warning not to take pictures. But my head jerked in its direction. I
saw a soldier pointing his rifle threateningly at me. I raised a placating hand and backed away.
