Looking for some different angles on this submarine on the promenade in Cartagena, Spain (3 versions).
Cartagena has been the capital of the Spanish Navy’s Maritime Department of the Mediterranean since the arrival of the Spanish Bourbons in the 18th century.
The Isaac Peral Submarine was single-hulled, and the ballast tanks were located underneath the torpedo tube This single torpedo tube was the only weapon in the sub.
The first practical submarine ever built, the Peral was launched on Sept.8,1888, sixteen days before another pioneer electric submarine, the French Gymnote.
After being decommissioned, this historic sub was scrapped, but the hull was sent to Cartagena where it now stands at the water’s edge as a fountain.
