Philadelphia Auto Show #2

By handlerstudio
A few years back, VW, the company that built the car many of us learned to drive a stick shift in, got caught big time with their pants down defrauding the world about the cleanliness and fuel efficiency of their diesel cars...they got huge fines,...and i think contributed to diesel cars pretty much going away....a good thing. They are highly polluting...and not much can be done about it.

The upside is that they have made a huge corporate commitment to electric cars...only one of which at this point is being marketed in the US, but i suspect more in the UK and in Europe.

Questions were raised yesterday regarding issues about EVs. So...batteries...this is a real question. I would suspect and hope that there are plans for recycling the lithium and cobalt in batteries as they wear out. The good news is that electric storage is probably the hottest R&D place in the renewables world right now...and stronger and cleaner batteries are in the works...Electrification This is a big issue here, as well as the rest of the world. Right now in the US, transmission needs to increase much faster than it is...and permitting along with it. Some of us politically are working on that. Charging Stations--yup..these need to multiply also. And will with demand as EV sales go up.

The reality is nothing is perfect...it is a question of what is better. We have to stop using fossil fuels.

The trouble in the UK is lack of charging points. Newer houses are now coming fitted with an external charging point, and there is talk of it being compulsory in new houses, in the future. It is very dark area, the cost of replacing a faulty battery!! Good set of the new car, Peter.

The cost of a new battery is immense, you may as well scrap the car and get a new one, and that is not environmentally friendly either.

Great set Peter. We’ll all be watching this space to see what happens next.

Very nice set of images Peter! The future will not be smooth where EV is concerned.

Rom what I know, the warranties on the batteries are pretty long...and by the time they wear out...there will be newer technologies.

I am all for phasing out fossil fuels for transportation
But we are witnessing the citizens of western country's not wanting lithium or Rare metals needed for EV technology dug up in their backyard ...my fear is the harm that will be done to third world countries and
thier people in order to mine these metals
In jurisdictions where such lax environmental standards and flagrant corruption exist. That would not be a
Win/WinSituation at all .
Cheers
