Piel Castle

By Mynett
Piel Castle
These are the impressive ruins of a 14th-century castle with its massive keep, inner and outer baileys, and towered curtain walls which are still standing. It was built by the Abbot of Furness and stands proud on the south-eastern point of Piel Island, built to guard the deep-water harbour of Barrow-in-Furness against pirates and Scots raiders. I took the image in October from the nature reserve on Whalney Island, a place which is well known for its wildlife, sea bird population and seals, however we did not see much wildlife while we were there at this time of year, but I would love to return this year.

I am still combing throught the mass of images I took on the weekend break in the lake district, it was one of the most productive outings I have ever had with the camera.

I thought this looks cheery and bright for the awful weekend we have had, with so much damage caused by the high winds here.

Stay safe and warm Smile

certainly like the subject, a little off the left to my eye would aid the composition. Nice fair weather photography.

A fine composition, Linda, and a great presentation in V.1. For a change I saw the sun today, it's been missing for the last week and I haven't been out with the camera until today! Carol

Cracking shot Linda, what a wonderful place to stroll and take images, V2 for me. Thanks for the info too, very interesting. Don't think I remember such a prolonged period of windy weather, been like it for days.

A stunning looking scene captured beautifully. I have to say, prefer your original version in V1. Those foreground posts are so tactile, really adding such a strong sense of embattlement and ruin while retaining such strength.

Hi Linda hope you guys are OK with the terrible weather - just extremely dull and dreary here - but at least we're safe and warm. Just lovely to see some blue sky - V2 for me as well - Ina

Superb images Linda, it looks an amazing place, and your write-up is fascinating. My, you have some great images from your Lakes holiday!! Top work here. Hard to choose but v.1 by a mouse's whisker, for me. Spring will be along not far from now. Hope the wind has subsided where you are.

A great landscape image captured here - like the crop of v2 but perhaps with a 16:9 ratio cropping - cant seem to copy the image to do a mod - doing something wrong I expect

Lovely capture, Linda, of this interesting castle, looks a great place for a visit. Like both versions, but think the wider crop of V1 has to be my fave. Nice to see a sky here today like in your image Smile, though it's very blustery again Sad
I look forward to seeing a lorra images of the Lake District, then, when you get them sorted! Smile
