Pink Flamingo

By Snapper100
This is a reworked image as I had been trying to take this shot for a while, in the summer the flamingos have a spray mist and I wanted to try and use the mist lit by the sunlight in the shot. Managed to obtain one of the lesser flamingo and after some post manipulation it turned out very moody, my only issue is with the white light on the back of the birds back but there is some detail in it.

A stunning bird, great colour.
I notice you took this at probably the most sunniest part of the day. Birds' feathers are so very reflective, any kind of light falling on them would give unavoidable highlights.
Would be nice to see the original as you say you have done some manipulation to this.
The only thing I could suggest would be the use of the clone tool set to a quite low opacity, on a separate layer, that's what I have attempted to do on the mod with an added drop of sharpening and lightened the centre a touch.
As an aside,if you took out all the highlights then the bird would look a bit flat I think, you need some subtle ones to give him form and shape.
The water spray has rendered the bg dark and your shutter speed was probably not fast enough to catch it as actual drops.
I do love his beady eye staring at you, position in the frame is nice he does make a statement against that bg.

The EXIF shows that this was shot in 2011, with an EOS 20D, so the quality you could achieve in (relatively) low light with a modern body would be far higher, of course.

Can you go back and retake the shot, I wonder? Or is your interest purely in the processing side, which Janet has addressed thoroughly?

Thanks for the comments, I have been back but they have never had the sprays working, as for the camera, I know that the quality would be better on my current Nikon and any Canon D range camera after that thanks. Will take on board the cloning and resubmit when I have had a go

Do you have the original shot before you reworked it? If you j=have, upload it here, click the Modifications button and select Upload, and it will appear as your one mod.

I wouldnt be surprised if you done have it as the shot is 8 years old.

Thanks

Its a nice effort either way.

I have uploaded a mod that has the Flamingo more pink on my monitor, a brighter eye, the background brighter and sharper, and re framed to add more space on the right side.

I still like the more ominous appearance of yours.

Hope you like it.

Thanks Banehawi for the modification, I can now see the with the spray and the eye. as for the cloning the highlight on the back I would say it looks too sharp as the death of field is not that great. I do have the original as i keep them for records if I can dig it out again I will upload it for you. thanks for your feed back

Aside from the burn out on the back, the bird looks rather low in contrast. Possibly a degree of under exposure? Te background looked strange to me until I read what it was - but it really doesn't look like water spray. It needed some strong side to three quarter back lighting to give it sparkle.
