There was an interesting point in last night's Full Steam Ahead on BBC2, on the social changes that came with the arrival of steam locomotives which could transport heavy goods like slate and coal more easily. Round-bottomed cauldrons for cooking over a wood fire would last hundreds of years, flat-bottomed kettles and saucepans for cooking on a coal stove would need replacement several times in a lifetime. The start of built-in obsolescence...
