Porch

By gss
Today as is the Annunciation (in Romanian Buna Vestire = Good Announcing), a space like a kind of announcing: the Patriarchy porch (Romanian = pridvor or portic). The porch is somewhat a kind of announcing when entering into a building, it has an ambivalent specific, an inside / outside space in the same time. Even if it was not created by us, it became, in the dark of ages, a Romanian architectural specific element. It is present in all kind of local vernacular architecture - house, church or installation - Romanian people could not imagine a building without it. Inside it you are equally inside and outside, you have the benefits and disadvantages of indoor and outdoor spaces. Even in contemporary architecture, in minimalist "clothe" and expression it is still present.
Here, unlike in many previous ( from historical point of view) examples the porch was not added after the church body construction, but at the same time. And the columns are not in stone but in brick, hence their massive aspect. The porch is covered by a vault system with 3 compartments separated by arches, generating 3 domes. The paintings are from a XX century restoration (1932) and were done by Romanian church painter Dimitrie Belizarie. It is only one exception: above the door, in a niche, there is the Saint Patrons icon (St Emperors Constantine and Helen) , the only small fragment of the original fresco, in all the church, painting done in 1668.
Through the porch. large perspectives are opening towards the actual Patriarchy palace (former Romanian Parliament until 1992), dominated by a large neo classic porch, and the former Patriarchy palace and the chapel (Paraclis). The whole ensemble was built at the top of a small but visible hill in the center of Bucharest, so the buildings are more tall that as seen from the church, as the land down all around.
