Portmoon Bay & Benadanir

By Johnnybairdphotography
“Portmoon Bay & Benadanir”

It has been awhile since I’ve been On Causeway Coast Way before sunrise. The location I had selected for photographing was Portmoon Bay. Being a short 10 - 15 minute walk from Dunseverick car park, it was an ideal place to check how things were shaping up, and move on if needed.

Cloud cover was variable but it looked promising, so I settled for a composition that included the island of Benadanir (middle/bottom right.) An island stack with interesting texture and shape, Benadanir may be translated from Irish to Headland (or 'Peak') of the Danes. Many place names in the area have been passed on solely by oral tradition, with meanings becoming obscured over time. There is very limited information on this area, but the Vikings may have named it during settlement.

In the distance, below Contham Head, sits Portmoon bothy in Portmoon Bay. The bothy is an ex-salmon house that was used as a base to net salmon until 2002. For a small overnight fee you can stay in the Bothy, but you will need to bring candles!

I don’t think I’ve ever seen the sea so calm, with barely a wave breaking, but the breaking of the morning light certainly made up for it. Perhaps on many occasions the Vikings wished for such calm conditions as they sailed the coast.
