Around the 1840s a factory for the production of blackpowder or gunpowder was built, not far from Postbridge on Dartmoor. Gunpowder was needed for the tin mines and granite quarries that operated on the moor. The buildings were built widely spaced from one another for safety and the mechanical power for grinding the powder was taken from waterwheels driven by a leat.

Now known as "Powdermills" or "Powder Mills", there are extensive remains of this factory still visible. Two chimneys still stand and the walls of the two sturdily-built incorporating mills with central waterwheels survive well; they were built with substantial walls but flimsy roofs so that in the event of an explosion, the force of the blast would be directed upwards hopefully! The ruins of a number of ancillary buildings also survive. A proving mortar - which is a type of small cannon that was used to gauge the strength of the gunpowder, still lies by the side of the road to the nearby pottery.

This shot of an enclosed clump of trees, was taken whilst rummaging around this interesting place, earlier in the year.

Thanks to Jerry Jones of Shadowhouse Creations for the use of the texture image.

The silhouette trees against that lovely textured sky work very well indeed Dave. The birds are a pleasing addition too.

Dark and mysterious Dave. Obviously a 'blast ' has startled the birds into flight.

Beautifully atmospheric image Dave!
The layers in my Winter Abstract are, from bottom to top, Ice in the bottom of an old barge, the side of the barge, the ice on the canal, and reeds on the other side of the canal.

A lovely, atmospheric shot. For my sins I worked in a powder mills for about ten years. It was situated in Waltham Abbey and was called the Explosives Research and Development Establishment or ERDE for short. Some of the specialised buildings there had very thick walls. Its now a sort of theme park - oh well.
