Put your back into it

By markst33
I got a Panasonic Lumix TZ70 for carrying with me when I go on city breaks and holidays with the family instead of lugging a heavy DSLR and lenses around with me. I researched a fair bit before settling on this as the reviews were pretty good and it shot RAWS.

So I was in Venice for the first time last weekend and this is probably a photo you have seen a million different versions of in the past but this was my first time shooting Gondolas in their natural habitat so you will have to bear with me. As usual all constructive C&C's most welcome.

The Liffey boat races have certainly changed!

Its quite good, I like how the gondola is placed.

Theres no exif data, - good if you could add it.

Mod is a touch warmer, slightly brighter in the canal area, and a small amount of lens correction to get converging verticals a little straighter.

No Exif, but clearly very wide angle - I like the distortion, the importance it gives to the prow of the boat.

I added half a stop exposure and skewed bottom right out a tiny bit.

Given that there is already distortion, I added a bit more, using Free Transform. It allows the gondolier to lean more to our right which looks better balanced to my eye, and reduces the empty space bottom right.

That works nicely: and the camera has a viewfinder, which is, I believe, essential.

A really good and involving view with the wideangle end of the zoom: which is where to stick - the 720mm-equivalent tele is probably just about unusable in practice (go on - prove me wrong!) I hope that the focus speed is not disappointing you: my experience of compacts has not been happy, but I know they continue to evolve.

I think Moira has used the Nik detail extractor for her mods, or something similar, and it can be remarkably effective at increasing the visibility of detail and texture. I may have a go at a tighter crop, based on one of Moira's mods. Just a thought...

Nothing quite like yours, Mark.

You managed to get two gondolas in your frame, and both of them are coming towards us, so we can see the action of the gondoliers quite clearly.
I like the way the waterway opens out in front of us, and the movement and reflections in the water.

I'm very impressed with Modification 3, where Moira has expanded the waterway so that the front boat stretches across the frame. And then John brings it forward to make it more important in the frame. I like that.

A perfectly good image of the scene and well composed. In many ways rather better than the norm due mainly to the wide angle. Just a bit dull? Maybe a touch of brightening and contrast?

I agree with mrswoolybill about the dead space in the bottom right. I first distorted the image a wee bit and then made the image narrower. It's also squeezed the second gondola a bit which rather pleases my quirky way of thinking.

Getting that image from the bridge was really good positioning, plus as the traffic along that bit of canal into the Bacino Orseolo can be solid, you managed quite well to capture what you did. It's non ruddy stop with the tour parties there!
