Radicchio di Treviso

By GwailoAngMo
We had an interest in local markets ever since we were in Luang Prabang, Laos in September 1998. Our local guide asked us if there was anywhere we would like to go to and Laing said, without missing a beat, the local market. The sights and smells that met us of ordinary life gave an insight into the everyday which ordinary packaged tourism did not. We liked to think we, and probably others who expressed such an interest, had this added to modern package itineraries.

If we hadn’t been such nosey parkers we wouldn’t have looked at the vegetables on sale and never have seen Radicchio di Treviso. How can you say you’ve seen Venice without seeing local produce, Treviso being only 17 miles or 27 km away?

As delicious as it looks in colour, the radicchio makes for a delightful monochrome. Colour makes for a delicious, mouth watering image, but black and white is a fun abstract.

To do it justice apart from black and white, radicchio makes a nice salad too (when boiled and served with olive oil and lemon drizzle) that can accompany fried fish dishes.

Wonderfully wriggly and tactile.
