From Wikipedia, the 2-mile-long (3.2 km) bridge over the Venetian Lagoon between Mestre and Venice was opened on 13 January 1846. It was built with 222 arches supported on 80,000 larch piles.
It was only with the arrival of the railway that Venice became joined to what would become Italy.
The adjacent road bridge,
the Ponte della Libertà , was designed as recently in 1932 and completed in 1933.
