Reflections 1 - Coking plume

By oldgreyheron
I was driving between business appointments today a little after lunchtime and realised two things - I was early for my afternoon appointment and the light was wonderful. I stopped at the first convenient place, Middlehaven / Riverside Stadium in Middlesbrough. I had the IXUS with me. I was astounded to find the Tees with a glass-like surface and wonderful reflections.

This is industrial Teesside. The plume of steam is coming (I think) from the coking plant at South Bank (very close to my modern office). We are looking East from the Riverside (football) Stadium towards the North Sea.

!/640 f4 ISO Auto (why does it do that?)

There are more to come - I hope you enjoy this as something different from the soft nature I have been uploading recently! Please do tell me what you think! Thank you , Mike.

Fascinating shot, the plume of smoke is the story here, without it there'd be no real picture. I reckon that even without the reflection, that plume would make a pretty good image. The mirror-like water just lifts it to a whole new level.

I envy you for making this industrial scene look beautiful. Excellent composition, and the whole scene is virtually symmetrical. I look forward to more.

Can't explain the speed/aperture phenomenon precisely, but I think it has to do with the fact that the f4 on your Ixus is absolutely minute compared to the same on your DSLR, and that the expected proportionality does not in fact apply. But maybe I have been misreading my sources!

Thanks to all, and Joline, especially to you. I didn't make this into a work of art, I just saw what was there and pressed the shutter release. There's beauty and art all around us every day. M
