Rhonegletscher, Furkapass

By TrevBatWCC
Still on our 3 Passes tour, we stopped here at Rhonegletscher (Rhone Glacier) on Furkapass. Itís the largest glacier in the Urner Alps, and lies on the south side of the range at the source of the Rhone. As can be seen outside the shop in V3 itís 7,600 feet above sea level, and this was the highest location we visited during the whole weekís holiday. However, unlike at the top of the Rothorn, looking down into Brienz, some 5,500 feet below, here looking down into Gletsch (bottom left in V4), itís only about 1,700 feet below. After leaving here we descended down into Gletsch, continuing up the winding road.

Fabulous detail in your mountain studies, Trev. As a would-be mountaineer (failed abysmally due to vertigo mixed with indolence) I love studying the textures of mountainsides and passes and almost overlook the rest of the surroundings. Impossible to decide between V1, V2 and V4!

Another beautifully captured set from the high Alps' passes,Trev: your images are so fresh and crisp and a delight to view, and as I have said before bring back fond memories.
The road snaking up the mountainside I know leads to the Grimsel Pass and the Grimselsee and Totensee where again I took a load of transparencies in 1967. I have scanned these and put them on to my hard drive, but they are nowhere near the quality of these digital images of your's. Just hoping you stopped at the top of the Grimsel before descending the Haslital back to Meiringen, and that you might have some shots from up there for us to see.
Regards, Ronnie.

Another great set of travel images. v4 is superb - just the sheer scale of it is amazing.
