Rhubarb Forcing Pots

By pamelajean
I found these lovely old pots in the Georgian walled flower garden at The Lost Gardens of Heligan, St. Austell, Cornwall. This botanical garden is known as the "sleeping beauty", a mysterious estate with a timeless essence. Heligan Manor was first built in the 1200s and, after decades of neglect and a devastating hurricane in 1990, the gardens have undergone award-winning restoration and are now a living museum of 19th century horticulture, acting as a window into the past.
These pots, though not confined to the forcing of rhubarb, are placed over the emerging shoots or crowns to produce an early crop. The darkness and warmth inside the forcer encourages the plant to put on early growth, which is especially tender, sweet, less acidic, and doesn't need peeling.
4 versions for your perusal.
Pamela.

Delectable colours and textures across the four versions, emanating an atmosphere of warm contentment. I have a slight preference for V2.
I must admit to waiting a moment for Bill and Ben to appear - I never did grow up Smile

A wonderful image Pamela - the texture in the pots and brickwork is tangible.

I so love this walled garden - and the potting shed is my most favourite place I think - there is something so special about it.

A lovely set Pamela but only like rhubarb if it's covered with lots of sugar,

Coo Pamela I would love to get my hands on one of those old rustic pots.Wonderful shapes you just want to stroke. I love version 2 with the bit of colour from the pink Dahlia . A great view of the forcing pots standing behind the fine old brick wall.

My friend came to see me two night's ago. She brought me an armful of Rhubarb and yesterday I made 6lb of Rhubarb & Ginger Jam. Delicious on scones Smile xx
