After a wander around Piazza San Marco, I headed towards Rialto and the bridge. The present stone bridge, a single span designed by Antonio da Ponte, was finally completed in 1591, and is similar to the wooden bridge it succeeded. Two inclined ramps lead up to a central portico, either side of which covered ramps carry rows of shops. The engineering of the bridge was considered so audacious that architect Vincenzo Scamozzi predicted future ruin. The bridge has defied its critics to become one of the architectural icons of Venice.
The lead image was taken approaching the bridge to cross it, the first version by the east side of the Grand Canal, and a shrine on the side of the bridge Ė can't find what itís supposed to represent, but it does have a few love locks in front of it, they get everywhere! V2 is a fuller view of the bridge.

An interesting intro above which helps one's appreciation of the structure: fine set of shots that give one a real flavour of what it's all about, and as Isabel says, each a visual winner.

The little shrine fascinated me, Trev, so I did a bit of digging for information.

"This shrine to the Madonna is at the base of the Rialto Bridge, on the San Polo side. She's a bit worse for wear but there are always lots of flowers in front of her.
Venice Explorer has photos of this Madonna as part of the evidence for their campaign to save Venice from the effects of sulphur created by gas-powered boats. It's pretty incredible to see how much this Madonna has deteriorated since 1976.
They write: In these pages we document the state of the stonework - bricks, Istria stone, Verona marble, and generally all of the calcars - of Venice. As will be seen, the assault of sulphur is consuming stones at a rate that allows us no more time for hesitation and speculation as to the effect on the fabric of the city. It is happening before our eyes. Most of the damage is very recent."

The stone reliefs on the bridge depict the cityís patron saints St. Mark and St. Theodore and the Annuciation.

A fine set of images, Trev; a great reminder of our trip to Venice in 2002/2003 - pre-digital, anyway!
An informative and interesting narrative which, coupled with Pamela's comment, give a great account.
