Last weeks adventure allowed me the opportunity to get up close and personal with a small pod of resident Orcas while kayaking along the shoreline of Quadra Island, British Columbia. While kayaking along the shore on the outer side of the island, we noticed a bunch of boats heading towards us from behind. Upon closer examination, we realized a few dorsal fins were coming our way, between us and the boats. Not knowing if they were resident or transient orca, my first instinct was to race towards shore. They were coming up fast and quite close so I paddled enough to get out of their way, and sat quietly to enjoy the show as they passed by. This is closer than I would ever get to one of these beautiful creatures, but opportunity put me in this situation. Right place, right time!
