Rising Sun 2

By Paul1972
This was a picture I recently took on my travels in China.
I wanted to silhouette the mountains against the sun to capture the surrounding area although I managed to do that I am not sure if its just another sunrise shot.Any feedback or comments would be appreciated.

I like this, I havent quite mastered taking shots with the sun directly in them, in this you seem to have minimal glare from the sun and the trees are nicely sihouetted

Thanks Lou for your comments and thanks Frank for your upload and comments it is appreciated.
I was not sure myself as I felt this was another sun rising shot but I liked the landscape and tried to show some depth and size to where I was. This was defiantly one my best times in China and an experience I wont forget and I would like to make a print of this but was not sure if it was good enough.
Thanks again

Hello, Paul. The picture means a lot to you, so it won't be just another rising sun shot in your eyes, more of a memory of your travel to China. To the impartial viewer, it would be hard to guess the location. You have captured what you set out to achieve, with strong silhouettes and a golden sky. I would like to have seen some interesting clouds in the sky and something stronger and more positive as the silhouette, but that would be the ideal. As it stands, it has a lot of strength. I have the same issue with the sun in the centre, and have done a modification where I cropped the left side to offset the sun, choosing that side because the silhouetted foliage there is blurred, and not as well defined as the rest of the silhouette. I also cropped the bottom to take away some of the heaviness of the black. I adjusted highlights/shadows to deepen the silhouette, slightly adjusted levels, then used Noise Removal on the central mauve/grey area where there is some grain/noise. Slight sharpening gave the silhouette a more defined edge.

Hello Pamelajean thank you for your upload its looks more interesting and I appreciate your point about making the place identifiable by having something in the image that informs the viewer of the place. And I agree it would be nice to have something else going on the picture but in this case being on top of a mountain there's was not alot around apart from the surrounding scenery in the distance and the mass of Chinese next to me though I was hoping for more dramatic clouds. Thanks again

This is actually quite well handled as including the sun in the frame is fraught with problems. However, compositionally both mods improve on the image as I'm sure you can see.
