Road Trip USA (19)

The Bonneville Salt Flats -- Utah, USA

The Bonneville Salt Flats and the Great Salt Lake are remnants of ancient Lake Bonneville. Wind and water combine to create the flat surface of salt. Each winter, a shallow layer of standing water floods the surface of the salt flats. During spring and summer, the water slowly evaporates while winds smooth the surface into a vast, nearly perfect flat plain.

The salt surface contains potassium, magnesium lithium and sodium chloride (common table salt).

This photo was taken in late September and the salt surface is under about an inch of water. The white salt under the water creates a perfect mirrored surface. The area you see here in this photo is the beginning of the Bonneville Salt Flats International Speedway. Yesterdays upload was taken on the access road to the area. Unlike the summer when there are hundreds of people and cars out to break speed records.....this time of year there it is devoid of any lifeforms and activity.

My son and I were out there all alone. No life as far as you can see in any direction. The feeling of solitude is amazing. You can stand there and scream to the top of your lungs and the sound seems to fade away just a few feet in front of you. It is so flat that distance and speed become difficult to judge as there is nothing standing to give you a reference.

PLEASE VIEW LARGE!

Thank you for stopping by.
Ty

Ah, the Bonneville Salt Flats - still on my list of places to visit. I just never ventured that much west out of Salt Lake City, when I was there.

Very nice capture of this interesting location.

An historic place, no motoring history book gives you such uncluttered views as this. Excellent landscape work, Ty.

A remarkable place, and well captured here. I think you'd have an even stronger image if you cropped out some of the foreground and placed the horizon on the third.

A quite awe inspiring image Ty. Even allowing the imagination to run riot its difficult to try to picture the vast expanse that you describe. Amazing shot.

Better to go out of season and have this wonderful site to yourselves rather than in the busy season. Better for us too as we can appreciate the real beauty of this unusual place.

I think the best word for this 'awesome' in its true sense. Great to have the background information about the place behind the deeds we've all heard about.

V1 and especially V2 really show the glassy reflective surface of the flats. I'd love to be in this vast expanse of space and sing at the top of my voice!
