Rock Chick

By Philo
Following recent shots of my daughter Megan this is an attempt to capture her in a more natural, relaxed pose. Any better? I am not sure about the arm she is leaning on and maybe I should have cloned out her tattoo.
All comments and mods welcome.
Thanks for looking.

The arm and the feet don't look particularly natural or comfortable.
How much you can suggest to her in terms of posing is something between yourselves.
It's great that she's posing for you, given that I seem to remember she had reservations about it until you photographed your niece.
The tattoo, if it's permanent, is Megan. So why clone it out. Unless perhaps you don't like it. Smile

It's a nice shot and she looks comfortable with the lens so, well done both of you.

It's part of a development. For Megan, as well as for you

Hi Phil,

There's not really much wrong with this technically as far as I can see, It's lit well enough, focus is good as is the DoF.
As for her pose, if Megan's anything like my Chloe, I don't think you'll ever get it exactly right.
My daughter's a little younger than Megan (I think) and although she's really quite photogenic and is more than willing to oblige when I point a camera towards her, the result is that she either strikes up a hopelessly unnatural pose, or collapses in a slouching heap!
Megan's pose here isn't quite as bad as either of those options although it does look a little contrived, it's not too stiff or wooden.
As for the tattoo, I reckon they're all part of the process of growing up (or not, I've got loads!) and if it's there, I'd leave it.
Overall, I reckon this is a pretty good shot.

Hope this helps,

Bren.

I agree with Strokebloke that the pose is awkward, the angle you have taken it from brings the left forearm into the most prominent position whilst her feet recede into the out of focus region.
Try it again with a head on shot so that her legs cannot be seen and have her support her chin on her hands.
Don't be afraid to move around as you work, try out different angles both horizontally and vertically.
The tattoo is fine, you could even make a feature of it to give the rock chick title more impact.

Thanks Guys, still awkward as suspected. I will upload another version later that is hopefully an improvement.
Ken, I have the pose you suggest at 2 different locations but her expression isn't great. The tattoo is a few days old and so not looking it's best. Certainly not a permanent tattoo: she's only 8!
I will just keep trying.
Cheers for the feedback everyone.

Not really that bad at all. The legs and arms are just a touch awkward - one leg on top of the other doesn't seem how someone would naturally recline. Ask her if she feels comfortable - we should all do that with models of any age - if your requested pose makes them feel uncomfortable either physically OR mentally - then it will look so in the image.

I think you are a little over exposed. detail going in trainers - just a touch darker.

Thanks Paul, I just asked her to lay down and relax so she should have been comfortable. Trainers are just on the borderline I agree.

My 2 cents worth, - or pennies:

I would think that lying on a rock in almost any position is going to be uncomfortable, and will look posed as a result.

What I could see is Megan SITTING on the rock, with her knees pulled up towards her, her hands clasped in front of her legs, facing you, with her head in any number of positions, all of which I think could look very natural.

I think, - just a personal opinion, that you are concentrating way too much on the technical, and not enough on what makes a young girl look just like a young girl. Im sure you do this, - but dont forget to ask her opinion on how she should pose, - and watch her on the rock when you are NOT shooting and you will find your shot.

You may have a valid point here Willie and I will see what she thinks about your suggested pose.
Cheers Frank, yes she is the little poser. The good thing is that she now wants to do it and is excited about the results. And of course I will never tire of photographing her.
See what you make of the next ones.
Thanks again to everyone for your contribution.
