Hi Rupert, welcome to the Critique Gallery. You've been on the site for a few years, I think this is the first time that you have ticked the critique button? You're LRPS and NUJ accredited, with an impressive portfolio of rock photography. I wonder - did you intend to tick for critique? And if so, what are you looking for in the CG?

A few thoughts. First, it's Wight not Whight, that makes a difference for anyone doing a tag search here!

Secondly - this is much more intimate than most of your images that I have seen, and it works for me. I wish the focus was on the lips not on the mic - did you focus there hoping for the profile to be in the same plane?

Thirdly, I'm not sure that the breadth of a 3 x 2 landscape frame serves the purpose, too much 'flab' on ether side.

I cropped tighter, I ended up with a 10 x 8 frame which seems to me to suit the intimacy of the shot. I added exposure which gives the purple / blue of the stage lighting as well as a bit more detail, and I reduced contrast. Then I used the burn tool gently to tone down the hair a bit.

Just minor tweaks. You'll find modifications under the blue button below your upload. I really enjoyed this, it reminds me that I haven't photographed a gig in ages. But please let us know what you are looking for in the Critique Gallery.

EDIT - Just noticed, you appreciate Vivian Maier too. Grin

Hi Moira,

I did not intend to click the Critic button, but I do appreciate the feedback, always good to get constructive feedback of work. Yes, I was trying to go for something more intimate in the shot, as the light looked good, I felt.

It was different from my usual style as you commented and I was unsure if it was working.

Second mod added, much tighter crop, a bit less added exposure, I prefer this.

I would try it as a mono without the hair, as in the mod.

Good dramatic shot. In my opinion the hair detracts, demanding too much attention, but conversely I think that touch of red lifts it onto another level.

Accidental feedback - like a sound check...

Nothing to add - you have the technical excellence, and going in close seems to me to work well. Part of me would compose with the whole microphone in shot - but I do think it's better cropped. It's all about the singer and the mike: neither need be complete.

For me the microphone is entirely dominant and demands all the attention. The face is very secondary and, as above, the hair is a bit confusing. It is different and makes the viewer look but, as I said, really a shot of a microphone.
