Hello again, Angie.
This is going to be a hard one to critique unless we can see the original. You can upload that as a modification. Click on the blue modifications button below your picture and follow the instructions.
It looks as if you have done two things. Firstly, you used low light and secondly you put a light circle on the rose. The light circle isn't attractive and in fact destroys the dark presentation that you initially wanted. The two things don't go together.
Knowing your reasons behind this would help us a lot.
If you like the result that you have achieved, please say so, and we can then only say whether we like it or not. But if you have reservations, we can offer alternative processing suggestions once you have uploaded the original.
Pamela.
PS: Whilst I was typing, you made the above comment. I understand that you are working on old images and trying to come up with some creative presentations?

The effect calling attention to itself, yes that's my feeling. And I'm not convinced that low light, without any highlights, can work for the subject. I'd want to concentrate on the light first, get it right on the centre of the flower. Concentrate on that and let the processing play second fiddle.

Thanks Pamela and Moira, yes I have been revisiting photos from the past as many I have not processed at all - this being one of them. The circle behind the rose was quite a surprise to me. It appeared as I lightened the corners of the image with Viveza. I can only think that it was a reflection from the light I shone on the rose to get the centre highlighted. I have no additional photographic equipment - camera, flash and tripod - so added light is either a table tamp or a torch.

A couple of things to add.
The light you worked with here is really not low light; what you have is an underexposed image in decent light with some harsh light in the centre.
If I use the original image, and expose it more, and tone down the brightest parts, it looks not too bad.
Its uploaded as a mod.
So an increase in exposure, using perhaps 1/125th or slower may have worked out better for you. Also, as mentioned before, use the default metering mode rather than SPOT, - it will get you into a spot of trouble!
Regards
Willie

Thank ypu both Pamela and John. Wise words from you both and probably if I was 10 years younger I might agree with you but I suspect that I may be quite a lot older than you both - who I would guess are about the age of my children! If not younger! But I will endeavour to take all your positive comments and try my best to put them in to practise. Very grateful to everyone for your comments.

I am late to this but better late than never.
Never, ever consider yourself too old to learn stuff...keeps the little grey cells active
I have to agree with comments from the rest of the guys, the effect isn't doing this any favours and your original looks so much better.
Perhaps just a drop more exposure would have been in order as Willies' lovely modification has demonstrated.
