Roundhay Castle

By TrevBatWCC
Not a real castle, but a folly created by Thomas Nicholson, who in 1803 bought a large part of the ancient Roundhay hunting park in Leeds. He had his Mansion House built in the northern part of the estate close to the park's Upper Lake. By 1811, the 'castle' was constructed as an eye-catcher from the mansion, and also functioned as a belvedere and summerhouse. It is an elaborate construction with squat towers, a central arch, and a cross passage within. Above is a room that was used for shooting lunches and picnic parties, and the battlemented roof offered views of the woodland and Waterloo Lake.
The first two images were taken in 2010, the other two in 2008.

What happened to EPZ yesterday? Didnít get onto the site until mid-afternoon and was only on about 10 minutes or so then it went down! Tried several times to access, but was still down when I went to bedÖ😳

Raw images processed in Adobe Camera Raw, tweaked in Nik Collection's plugins and Photoshop Elements 2020.

Thanks again to everyone for your vote & comments on my previous uploads, it really is appreciated and encouraging 😃👍

Nice set Trev, and interesting narrative.

It makes me wish I had a garden large enough to build a folly! Will have to make do with a holly. A great set again! andy

A magical almost fairy tale set of images Trev. Very lovely and thank you for the information. Near enough to have a little trip!

Think a server went down and lost lots of comments etc that had been posted. Apparently informed on Facebook and Twitter but as I do neither, I cleared cookies on everything as per message. Think all is okay now.

Great set Trevor 👍
These are all excellent Trev, looks a great place to have visit and have a wander.

Good to hear everyone else had problems with this site. I thought it was my computer, I cleared cookies and it still didn't work and noticed yesterday's image and comments had disappeared. Glad to see it up and running again.Smile

You can't beat a good folly. I wonder if anyone's built one recently. Nice set, Trev.

A lot more convincing than most follies - this, one feels, would withstand a siege...

A beautifully constructed folly, Trev, v.2 the stonework is excellent but they all are. Your travel sets are like mini holidays - delightful to see. Shooting parties and picnic lunches originally, eh! Sounds like a good place for Monty Python re-enactment sketches too 😀

We appear to be photo-neighbours today Trev, and both on a similar theme👍👍. That looks a beautiful folly and I also like V2 with all that detailed stonework.

It begs the question; is it folly to build a folly?
