Rust (coloured)

By mrswoolybill
A variation on a familiar theme...
By way of explanation, this is my tajine (North African cooking pot), viewed from above.
The traditional tajine is a curious shape - a shallow dish with a tall, conical lid. The theory is that steam circulates inside it.
The lip round the edge in the photo is the base, about 4cm deep. The circle in the middle is the top of the lid, reaching a height of some 17cm.
I had been eyeing up its photographic potential for a while. It's not a Habitat/John Lewis/colour supplement version, it's the real thing - very coarse earthenware, uneven glaze. Nicely rustic. And rust-coloured.
I waited for a decent day last week and sat it on our floor tiles. Natural light, hand-held, no frills (though I did dodge a bit on the grouting between the tiles to the left, for balance). I was trying to use natural shadow to enhance the textures. Or something like that. Anyway, I like it.
It does a wonderful lamb casserole too, by the way.
We've just returned from my mother's 80th birthday celebrations, thanks to everyone for your very kind wishes, I'll catch up on the site when I've caught up with other things!
Thanks for looking,

I have one of these! Bought it in a souk in tangiers, along with a Fez, kaftan, jelabba. I can see it now in my minds eye, sitting in a restaurant with a steaming lamb tajine and a huge bowl of couscous, the smell was amazing! I did think once of doing a still life with the tajine, some spices, herbs and garlic bulbs but never got round to it. Thanks for this brief trip down memory lane.
Welcome back too!

Well,I certainly like the colour.Yes,you do need the shadows to avoid the ''catalogue'' look. Some nice tones of brown as well. And of course, the circular lines.A subject that not everyone would photograph, but I think you will know by now,I have no problem with that.Welcome back Moira.

Welcome back Moira - and what a creative return! Isn't it great that there are opportunities all around us like this - you have done your tajine justice. Our daughter is touring Ghana, Burkino Faso and Mali at present - I wonder if she will have come across intriguing cooking pots like this.

This is a change. The greatest people watcher I know isn't watching people. I thought of asking what did a Grecian urn, until I read that it was North African, so I decided not to mention it at all. Nice one, Moira.

Well Moira, anything that cooks well is ok by me. Nice view point on this interesting piece of cooking pottery. I bet it holds in the flavours well, and cooks meat really tender.
I don't need a beautiful Woman, just give me a Delia Smith cookalike Smile

Hope you enjoyed the celebrations Moira and nice to see you back!

A good record shot. Do you think it might be a little tight in the frame and benefit from a bit more space around it?
