Sadd Moor

Saddleworth moor is a remarkably understated area but paradoxically, it can be simply dramatic. Coarse grass, boggy underfoot, man-eating tussocks, rolling hills but it can be an unforgiving place.

Walking across Marsden Moor a couple of weekends ago, it changed from bright sun to storm and back to sunshine on a 30min cycle. Great cloudscapes. We came across a poignant reminder of how harsh the moors can be.

The cross marks where Sub.LT Ambler crashed, flying a Fairey Barracuda (MD963) of the RNAS Dunino Station Flight from Donibristle near Dunfermline on the 29th July 1945.
