Sadness - please read.

By lillypix
Sadness - this elderly lady lives in a small tribal village in the hills surrounding Luang Prabang in Laos.

Three years ago her daughter went on a fishing trip with other villagers and drowned in a freak accident. The sadness has driven her mother into a deep depression and premature senility. She stands all day every day, on a promontary overlooking the river which took her daughter from her. She just waits for her daughter to come back to her.

She hasn't spoken since the death and no longer seems to understand that her daughter is dead. If any woman walks nearby - villager, tourist or traveller - she hurries to them and strokes their face with immediate happiness until she realises it isn't her daughter and then the sadness returns.

The villagers love her and look after her. They take her food and water, and make sure she eats and drinks it. They take her clothes and make sure she stays warm, and when nightfall comes they help her back to her hut and into bed.

I've never experienced an aura of such palpable sadness. I kinda wanted to tell her story. Don't know why.

Thanks,
Lianna

Thanks for the story, - its also very touching how the villagers support her, quite unlike our society.

Its also a terrific image, and I have added it to my shortlist.
