I'm getting more of a calm serenity than melancholy, Alan, the light is very 'summer evening'.

Desolate looking place. Understand the sadness. Peter.
A touch of mellowness..

You've caught the atmosphere superbly Alan...very somber indeed.

Three falling diagonals including the branch at the bottom, and three rising, so emotional equilibrium I think.
That beam of light on the wall, sloping up to the gable end, is perfect.
Serenity, as Dave says.

Wall? Gable end?

They're headstones.

More melancholy, I think. Delightful none the less.

I totally misread the scale. I thought that was a ruined building with a curious window. I've never seen a pierced headstone before. Or a diagonally sloping top.
Being nosy - where is this?

You need to be doing a few more Sudokus, Moira... keep mental deterioration at bay.

A wonderful angle on this old graveyard. The play of light and the soft focus give a quiet feel and a touch of sepia gives time as well.

There's a quiet dignity to this Alan, would look in place on an Order of Service card.

I also missed that they were headstones.
A beautifully melancholic image.

I too thought old Church - the overall composition is beautiful.
The soft falling branch and shadows make this too'pretty' to be sad.
I love it.

I had derelict church buildin too until reading this, the scale of the leaves should have given it away. Deceptive and wonderfully composed image.

Interesting composition.Like the way the various diagonals are repeated throughout the photograph. Sad, melancholy, a quiet calmness, lots of different emotions.
