sailing on the Chesapeake #2

By handlerstudio
Still early morning....most sailors and charterers still asleep or catching early morning showers before leaving on their sails.....Taking advantage of a good sky....and a few Olympus in camera filters.

For anyone unfamiliar with the Chesapeake is the estuary of the Susquehanna River, which starts in New York State, and flows down through Pennsylvania and Maryland to form the Bay. It at one time was the richest estuary in the country, in terms of fish and shellfish taken. Oystering on the Bay was so plentiful that Chrisfield Maryland was at one time the country's busiest port....all shipping oysters around the country. The oyster population, due to viral disease and overfishing, is way down. i have heard that maybe 50 years ago you could see the bottom of the Bay in 8-10 get of water...all due to oysters, who are filters. The other large catches we eat from the Bay now are blue crabs and rockfish. In Maryland waters, the one way watermen are allowed to drag for oysters is under sail....on boats called skipjacks. Hard chined beamy boats with a large main and small working jib...designed for power rather than speed. The newest of them are probably a hundred years old. With the declining oyster catch, it becomes harder to maintain the skipjacks....some of them have become "crewed charter" boats as a way of keeping them up.

So here, not having left the marina, we are on Swan Creek, in Rock Hall MD, on the Eastern Shore, above the mouth of the Chester River, and about 10 miles above the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.

In the versions, I played with more Olympus filters, including their "grainy B&W".

Loved your photo and the narrative about Chesapeake Bay. At one time our family were planning a sailing trip there but it never went ahead. Sounded and sounds wonderful place!
