Sailing on the Chesapeake #9

Early morning on Dunn's Cove on the Choptank.. No crab pots in this part of the Bay. The watermen use "trotlines" instead. Two ends of a line are anchored a fair distance apart, often using engine blocks as anchors. They bait the line, which might be 1/4 mile long, with spaces in between, attracting crabs (blue crabs---the best) The run the line over a pulley, often a car wheel, and using hand nets, grab the crabs as they come up---never letting go of the bait. Out in much of the Bay, usually in 20' of water or less, there are lots of crab pots, which as a sailor, we are always on the lookout for. You don't want to run over one, as they tend to snag on the rudder---or worse---on the propeller. If you get one, you need to go under and cut it off. I've done it. If you try to run the engine with a crab pot hanging on, you can kill the transmission or even the engine. The line will jam.

Not always, but most workboats are named after women.
