Sailing on the Chesapeake #9

Birdwatching is one of the pleasures of sailing on the Chesapeake. Once in a while on the Corsica, more often in the Spring, we would see nesting pairs of Bald Eagles...of course cormorants, ospreys....geese formerly known as Canadian, and Great Blue Herons....i think one of our most beautiful birds, with perhaps the absolute awful bird cries...something like "quaaaaaak". They are amazing to watch, for a little while, hunting....they make like statues and watch. So, most of these are of a single great blue, and last one, back at the marina...a great blue living there.

Years ago, in the 1970s I lived in a commune in Upstate New York, near the Finger Lakes, about 20 miles south of Ithaca....but more importantly, about 10 miles north of the Susquehanna River, and about a mile from the Catatonic Creek. We had a rookery of great blues. two dozen or so. They had these huge nest made of stick about 75 feet up on some tall beech trees up the side of a gorge. First time we saw them...we were walking along the stream at the bottom of the gorge....and we heard them. Followed the sound. There they were, gliding around the nests. It looked (and sounded) like some primordial scene, pteranodons gliding around their nests....and of course, as we now know, birds are living dinosaurs...incidentally we were crafts makers in the commune. I was a jeweler. One day in the fall, I was outside when they whole flock of herons left to fly south for the winter....quite a sight.

And, thanks to Isabel for her UA for my photos of boats, last set. I am a great admirer of her work, her sets.

Peter

I grew up in Upstate NY. ON the Susquehanna River---so it goes, herons and so on--- Here in PA there is a rookery near town, and , it seems--a pair on our creek----when we first moved here I was sure we had dinosaur birds living in our woods---

ha ha ha! --and you saved the best for last!.......
