Sailing under a big sky

I ventured outside the home today to try my hand the kind of photography I would never consider.
Sitting on the quay at Orford Ness Suffolk, this boat with a transparent sail began manoeuvring through the other boats, the outcome was better than expected.
I like the look in b/w.

Is it a transparent sail, or a dropped-in sky?

I ask because nothing below horizon level seems to be visible through the sail...

It is transparent, however the boat was heeled over at a very steep angle whilst tacking.

OK, I think I get it - the darker land behind the sail is overpowered by light reflected on the near surface.
