San Giorgio Maggiore

By GwailoAngMo
One building which meant Venice to me since I was 7 or 8 is San Giorgio Maggiore. It featured as the backdrop to act one of The Gondoliers and was the cover for the 1961 D’Oyly Carte recording.

The campanile is accessible, thankfully by lift, and it affords a different view to the usual one across the water in San Marco.

The play of light here and on Giudecca, especially in the last hours before the sun sets, is a gift to anybody with a camera.
