Sandy Heys

By jamesgrant
On the Autumn Equinox I decided to take a walk up Kinder Scout and set Sandy Heys as my chosen destination...This time of year marks when the sun starts to get in a better position for the southern side of Kinder Scout for both sunrise and sunset...I had previously shot this area in the snow but wanted a more autumnal shot with some detail in the grass and rocks...Despite the temptation to head to Kinder Downfall, I managed to stay at Sandy Heys...It's a hard place to work with compositionally, especially in the earlier light...However, getting up there about a hour early I had plenty of time to scout and explore...For a while the sun went behind a bank of cloud, but I could see it materialising in the distance in Cheshire. Sure enough, the sun broke through the gap and created some lovely subtle light across the grassy foreground textures and rugged gritstone.
