Scarab beetle focus stacked

By Angi_Wallace
A stack of 180 images - - I borrowed my partners Michaels camera and equipment - Z6 plus 105 macro lens, extension tubes and Raynox filter, F11, ISO 400, shutter 1/15 plus 6 lights. It took hours in photoshop correcting the many minor problems from stacking in Helicon. Alsao include a 100% crop to show the details. I am pretty impressed with Michaels Z6 focus shift capabilities and his focus stacking equipment/ set up - hoping he will let me use it again 🙂

A couple of years ago I went to an exhibition of huge pictures printed on metal where insects had been shot using stacking.
They were truly stunning.
This could hold its own amongst then without any doubt.
Had I not recently seen a YouTube video on macro stacking I would not have known what you were talking about
And I still don't fully get it
But your perseverance has produced an amazing shot
And 180 images?! Wow!
Well done
Award winning stuff

The image is absolutely stunning, but I'm at a loss to see why you needed 180 images in the focus stack. At f11 I would have thought 10 or perhaps 20 would be plenty - or am I missing something ?

Thanks, at macro so much depth of field is lost. I know a lot of people shoot wider open from F8 and above but I wasnt getting my best results this way. So I experimented and using F11 plus the lowest increment possible meant less blurred areas between images
