I think this is great. Partly you seem to have gotten it right (and even better). The tones look better, sharpness is great. Yours looks more like a color shot, whereas the link-photo looks more like sepia tinted. The link shot is extremely funny though. first I thought the photo was stretched, but I guess it's not.

very near indeed k. the technique most obvious to me in the reference pic is created by dodge/burn tools, or burned layer blending on a light sepia toned image.
this is such a cute picture i had to play with it- be prepared...
edit: the hilites on the skin tone in this one are hotter so there is less material to burn. i uploaded one of those mods too. thanks

God those mods are good!
Thank you all so much for taking the time to do those, and everyone for all the comments, its really exciting. I only spent 5 mins using levels, mid tone contrast adjustments, some dodge but mostly burn, didnt add any layers but boy is this one going to get played with, thank you all again sooooo much
K.

stunning portrait - i love the dark style and the face is full of expression. it works especially well on the large version. soon as it opens the strength of the pulling power draws the viewer in.
if i knew enough people i would love to do a range of dark portrait work myself
keep up the beautiful work =)

Hi, It's been a while since I've had a look through your portfolio and I'm glad to see you've posted a few cracking shots since then.
This one really stands out for me, the expression, the framing and the finer detail in the hair and the texture and tones on the skin.
I'd love to be able to get a shot like this.
