Scorpion fly - Panorpa communis

By Mike_Young
Morning all,

Thanks to all for looking at my last Dragonfly upload, your votes and comments are much appreciated. A special shout to Steve and Fred who kindly awarded my image.

Today I suspect this will be a "marmite" image (you either love it or hate it) I hope it doesn't traumatise those of you not keen on insects..
This is quite a small creature easily overlooked, it is harmless to humans. This one is a male , the formidable looking tail is actually used in mating not as a "stinger"

Fascinating creatures insects, I enjoyed a series of wonderful lectures on the QM2 by Professor George McGavin and my young son who was sat next to me from then was determined to go into science. The joys of entomology, fascinating creatures. My award Mike.

Superb shots Mike. I think they are wonderful. They look as though they could be evil but as you say harmless. Cathy
