Thanks for the comment. IR can be done digitally, but it requires specific kit.

Most digital camera's have a filter called a 'hot filter' added to the surface of the sensor to filter out IR light - the reason being that without this filtering the image quality drops massively. It is possible to filter the visible wavelengths of light out, leaving mainly the IR wavelengths by the addition of an IR filter, but if the hot filter is still in place the exposure times needed can become too long to be practical. Therefore a whole industry has sprung up removing hot filters and adding an IR filter in its place - the result a digital IR (only) camera. The advantages are that exposure times are the same as for normal light. This image is taken with a camera that was intended for scientific use - the hot filter wasn't added and therefore by adding IR filters of different strengths to the front of the lens I get a IR camera.
