Sea Defences

By NDODS
Keeping with the theme Dungeness again, this image depicts one of the giant range markers that signify the arcs of fire from when the beach and the open sea were used for firing practice. Huge pontoons were located out to sea, and Sea Defence Battery's would you use the pontoons for target practice. Anything from .303 to 2inch shell would rain down over the choppy waters to find their target which were located up to 1600 yards away in the salty brine. Obviously Merchant and Fishing Fleets had to be outside of the killing area before firing could begin, hence the range markers.

Thank you so very much for all the wonderful comments and words of encouragement following yesterdays upload. Whilst not forgetting Chrissie and Gypsyman (Eric) for presenting me with their most appreciated User Awards.

I hope that you all have a wonderful day ahead, for me it is the start of my New Year Appointments, I shall be off to Tonbridge Wells and Sevenoaks to see a whole host of Consultants.

Highest regards as always

I love the minimalist approach adopted here and the interesting narrative. I would maybe try lift the shadows a bit to get a bit more detail in the darker areas, but it still works as it is. Well taken and the birds are an excellent addition. That shutter speed helped freeze them in the right spot.

I love the simplicity and the mystery, it hints at a story. I'd like to see the verticals 'corrected' on the left, simply because I think this sort of image works best with simple geometry, true verticals, horizontals and right angles.

Very interesting bit of instructional narrative about these structures: the subdued tones and threatening atmosphere seem to suit so well.
4 Jan 2013 9:53AM
With my imagination it hints of a stand off! But the sun peeping through says all will be well. Says a lot for what goes on in my mind!! But as a picture I think it's great - dark & moody. I think the emptiness of it works really well, Nathan.

@mrswoolybill, at first I was going to suggest the CCW correction of the verticals, but I think that the slight angle shows that the structure can be lowered down like a bridge, and making it fully vertical would seem a bit unnatural, even though the composition would probably improve on artistic merits.

I guess this is a typical dilemma in terms of either presenting things as they really are (I think the bridge is probably not fully vertical in fact), or trying to correct them to best fit the "rules" of photography. Maybe some others can comment on this valid point presented by Moira? It would be interesting to get more viewpoints on this.

The clouds could be cordite from the shells and rounds fired, and the guided missile over on the right! ready to go, and the boarding ramp on the left ready to drop for loading, I always preferred the L.M.G. Brenn, nice unusual photo Nathan, has atmosphere which Dungeness has plenty of in close weather, the birds are a bonus, plus the sun trying it's utmost to push through, well done like it, regards Leon.GrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrin have a good day.Wink

Dark and moody. I love the way the two birds have decided it's a fine perch! A far better use than that we humans make of such things.

another good one from an area i know nothing about. the subject has been raised that the vertical on the left is not in fact vertival yet they are on the the right that suggest to me the tether wire/rope on the range marker is pulling it off being vertical and nothing to do with the capture

Blank, empty space used well.

Rotation wont solve the verticals on the left as the lighthouse(?) is straight; you would need to select the structure and rotate it alone. Its worth a try just to compare.
