i see that you did not use a flashlight.
i see in his eyes some bright light reflected, was that a large window?

I used 2 large Flex LED panels from Westcott. You can do the same using speedlights or strobes in strip boxes.

It's nothing to do with whether you use LED, or speedlights, or strobes. Photons don't know which type of light source they are coming from. Physics is physics and light is light.

The key is LARGE LED panels - and as Wescott is a market leader, I assume there may be some sort of diffuser over the individual LEDs, giving the same look as conventional softboxes on flash units or older continuous sources.

Any way round, it's instant UA material - and that rests on masterly exposure (irrespective of light source...) and depth of field.

There's a diffusion cloth over the entire panel. So you get even, soft light across the whole thing. It's just like using a softbox of the same size, except that you can see the exposure before you take the picture.
